SURGE11 was created by accident.
In 2005, my new home was ravaged by a surge when a builder digging a basment for a new home hit the burried main (13,000 volts) that sent a massave surge thru the neighborhood. The surge was induced on all buried lines, cable, phone and electric. Everything was damaged even the cordless phones!, items thought to have been spared failed a short time later. To make matters worse the utility company back-fed our subdivision with a old & overloaded feeder "until repairs can be completed" thats still in use today.
Being an electrictian , I was elected the point man to solve the neighborhoods problems, and this is what I found.
Shortly after my home was hit I attended a Electrical Contractors convention, one of the vendors was displaying a Meter Mounted Whole House Surge Arrester. This type of unit is placed between your home and the incoming service, acting as a gate preventing the surge from entering your home. These are the same units the utility companys rent to their customers and they are just about bullet proof, in over 10 years of installing these I have not had 1 failure or claim of damage. Thats over 200 units... WOW!!!
I replaced my furnace firing board 3 times in 18 months, when RMS asked to install a surge suppressor I jumped and said YES! that was 7 years ago and not a problem since.

We have dirty power in the neighorhood, I lost my refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave

During my walk I stoped to say hi and noticed RMS installing a device on an electric meter
and inquired whats up, when I learned what was going on, I had them do mine as well. What a great device and I went to lineman school. I could have done it myself but at that price and the 10 year warrenty I let them do it, what a bargin!
